Refugee and Immigrant Success Establishment (RISE) is an SSO organization that is formally affiliated with the University of Michigan. Our faculty advisor is Said Hannouchi and they can be reached at saidhann@umich.edu.
RISE aims to empower immigrants by providing access to essential community resources, such as tutoring, personalized job search assistance, and mentorship. These resources address common challenges faced by immigrants and refugees upon their arrival in the United States:
1) Difficulty finding employment due to limited English proficiency or non-transferrable qualifications from their home countries, often resulting in overqualification for low-paying jobs.
2) Challenges in pursuing higher education, including fewer opportunities and unfamiliarity with the college application process. Additionally, lack of encouragement in densely populated immigrant areas may discourage younger individuals from pursuing education due to financial pressures.
3) Being the primary financial support for their families can prevent immigrants from pursuing higher education.
Each immigrant faces unique circumstances, making it challenging to find and access appropriate resources tailored to their needs. However, these resources do exist. Our goal is to connect immigrants with nonprofit organizations that cater to their specific challenges while offering personalized services directly through our initiative.
